What Is Allergic Rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is commonly known as hay fever. It occurs when your immune system overreacts to particles in the air that you breathe. This reaction releases chemicals like histamine that cause inflammation in the lining of the nose and eyes and throat.

For many of our patients in Sydney the frustration isn't just the sneezing but the exhaustion that comes from weeks of poor sleep. Severe or chronic allergic rhinitis can disrupt your daily life and reduce concentration at work or school. The condition is classified as either seasonal which occurs at specific times like spring or perennial which occurs year-round due to triggers like dust mites or pets.

Can allergies cause sinus problems?

The primary physical effect of allergic rhinitis is swelling. Inside your nose are structures called turbinates which warm and humidify the air. Allergic reactions cause these turbinates to become enlarged (hypertrophy).

This swelling narrows the nasal passage. It creates a physical blockage that makes nose breathing difficult. This obstruction often leads to mouth breathing and snoring and poor sleep quality. Furthermore the inflammation can block the drainage pathways of the sinuses. This leads to fluid buildup and increases the risk of bacterial sinus infections.

How is allergic rhinitis diagnosed?

Dr Crawford uses precise diagnostic tools to assess the severity of the inflammation and the structure of your airway.

Clinical History

We review your symptoms and identify potential patterns or triggers.

Nasoendoscopy

A small flexible camera is used to examine the inside of the nose. This allows us to see the size of the turbinates and check for other issues like nasal polyps or a deviated septum.

Allergy Testing

We may refer you for skin prick testing or blood tests (RAST) to identify your specific allergic triggers.

What are the treatment options for allergic rhinitis?

Management typically follows a stepped approach. We start with medical therapies and consider surgery if the physical obstruction persists.Understanding what to expect can help ease the anxiety often associated with surgery.

The first step is minimizing exposure. This might include dust mite covers for bedding or using HEPA filters or using nasal saline washes to physically rinse allergens from the nose.

Intranasal Corticosteroids

These sprays reduce inflammation in the nasal lining and are the most effective daily treatment when used with proper technique (pointing away from the septum).

Antihistamines

Combination Sprays

Newer treatments combine antihistamines and steroids in a single spray for faster relief.

For long-term control we may discuss immunotherapy. This involves exposing your body to small and increasing amounts of the allergen to build up tolerance. This is often managed in conjunction with an immunologist.

If medical management controls the allergy but you still cannot breathe well surgery may be the answer.

Turbinoplasty

This procedure reduces the size of the swollen turbinates. Dr Crawford uses modern techniques like Coblation or Radiofrequency ablation to shrink the tissue while preserving function.

Septoplasty

If a deviated septum is contributing to the blockage, fixing the structural bend can significantly improve the effectiveness of allergy treatments.
